Learn Hardscaping

Before hiring a contractor or estimating costs, understand the critical terminology governing San Diego architecture, permitting, and engineering.

Official Glossary

IB-165 (Information Bulletin 165)

A specific San Diego City bulletin governing work in the public Right-of-Way. It requires specific D-25 sidewalk and driveway apron blueprints, traffic control plans, and concrete mix regulations.

Right-of-Way (ROW)

The strip of land owned by the city between your property line and the street. Any modification here (like a driveway apron) demands a specialized ROW Permit and strict city engineering oversight.

Permeable Pavers

A hardscaping system designed with specialized joints allowing rainwater to filter harmlessly into the earth beneath rather than running off into city stormwater drains (highly recommended in North County Coastal).

Heat-Expansion Joints

Crucial flexible lines engineered into concrete slabs to absorb stress. Inland regions like Escondido require heavy-duty setups to prevent cracking under intense summer solar radiation.

Base Prep & Compaction

The invisible foundation of any driveway. San Diego soils often require heavy excavation (4-6 inches) filled with Class II base rock and vibratory compaction to guarantee load-bearing stability.

Ribbon Driveway

A minimalist style consisting of two parallel strips of paving (concrete or pavers) separated by ground cover like grass, gravel, or turf. Immensely popular in Del Mar for water conservation and organic aesthetics.
